Very Slow Start to Synod in Ireland

6 dioceses make no mention of the Synod

The Global Synod was launched in October 2021. In many countries the consultation phase has already been completed. But in Ireland the consultation phase is only now commencing.

A survey of the websites (21 Feb 2022) of the 26 Irish dioceses shows:

  * 6 dioceses make no mention of the Synod

  * Only 4 name their Synod Contact person

  * Only 5 have online response forms

Only 7 of our diocesan websites got a PASS mark, with Dublin and Armagh leading the way.

Pope Francis specifically said that the Synod should include those at the periphery. That should include the large numbers who have walked away from the Catholic Church over the past 4 decades. There is little in the diocesan websites to attract those who used to attend regularly before covid. I saw nothing to attract those who have left.

It is a dull document but perhaps all the cans that have been kicked down the Synodal road will yet create a din that cannot be ignored.
