Sr. Mary Donnelly RIP - supporter of full equality for women in the Catholic Church

Colm Holmes • 7 January 2023

Sr. Mary Donnelly was a Member of BASIC and We Are Church Ireland

She worked on the missions with the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary in Nigeria, Tanzania, Zambia, England and Ireland. She was a strong supporter of the full equality of women in the Catholic Church. At her funeral mass in St. Brendan’s Church, Coolock (7 January 2023) her eulogy mentioned her joining a protest outside the Papal Nuncio’s residence in support of Women. That protest was organised by WAC Ireland and took place on 14. February 2015 (Valentine’s Day!). In the group photo Sr Mary is second from right. The Papal Nuncio came along in his running shorts, but refused to engage in any conversation – Mary was not impressed.

Thank you, Mary, for your support for women!

It is a dull document but perhaps all the cans that have been kicked down the Synodal road will yet create a din that cannot be ignored.
