WAC welcomes political leaders support for Women’s ordination.

We are Church Ireland welcomes and endorses the call by Taoiseach Leo
Varadkar, Minister Josepha Madigan and the Leader of Fianna Fáil, Michéal
Martin, for women’s ordination in the Catholic Church as an issue of gender
equality.
We disagree with the response of the Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin
that the ban on women priests is a “core teaching of the Universal Church”
we rather consider it a product of a long history of Catholic misogyny.

There is no scriptural basis for the ban on women priests in the Catholic
Church, as was confirmed by the commission set up by Pope Paul Vl in the
nineteen seventies.

The continued denial by the hierarchical Church of women’s right to equality in their Church is an affront to their dignity and
vocations in the sight of God. It is now also a scandal to young people who
cannot see the face of the God of equality in the Catholic Church’ stated
Brendan Butler, spokesperson.
