We do not agree with the Commission that “Responsibility for that harsh treatment
rests mainly with the fathers of their children and their own immediate families.”
The hierarchical male church played a leading role in imposing and reinforcing a
punitive moral code on women that was accepted by the state.
The stories of the women and men are harrowing and heartbreaking. The women
were cruelly abused, denigrated and sinned against in a deeply misogynistic society
controlled by the church hierarchy.
We will continue to work for just structures in our church so that change in Catholic
teaching on sexuality, governance and ministry will come from a
more democratic input of women and men.
We endorse Taoiseach Micheál Martin’s statement that “actions speak louder than
words.” The demands of survivors should be met before the end of 2021:
Listen to them and answer all questions
Full access to identity and relevant records
Generous Redress with respect for applicants
Locate all remains and graves and bury with dignity
