WAC-IRL Press Release: No confusion among Catholics over Women’s Ordination

We Are Church Ireland  strongly disagrees with the Prefect of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Archbishop Ladaria's assertion on May 30th that 'Jesus decided to reserve the sacrament of the priesthood to the 12 Apostles, all men, who in turn communicated it to other men'.

We believe that there is no biblical basis for  such a claim by the Prefect. In fact, a Pontifical Commission in 1976 stated that there was nothing in Scripture that barred women from priesthood. It is our conviction that his statement  is an expression of the inbuilt misogyny that has and continues to influence and dominate Vatican theology.

He also attempts to stop the ongoing discussion among Catholics on the Ordination of Women by alleging that further discussion on the issue 'would create confusion among Catholics'.

'We Are Church Ireland believes that the majority of Catholics welcomes the ordination of women to the priesthood and that this exclusion of women is not due to the teaching of Jesus but to the failure of a male, clerical Church to recognise the basic equality of men and women.' stated Brendan Butler, spokesperson,  We Are Church Ireland.
