Foreword to “What happened to Fr Seán Fagan?” by Angela Hanley (Columba Books 2019)

A heartbreaking read! Makes one wonder whether there is any future for a Church governance system that has invested so little internal reflection on the human right to freedom of conscience, opinion and belief and absolutely nothing on due process, justice, truth and dignity of the human person. Unless conscripted at baptism no one with a shred of decency could seriously consider joining the Catholic Church until such a dysfunctional system is reformed. There is no visible sign of any such reform being underway. In fact the Church under Francis has deliberately and almost unremarked, slipped backwards in its relationship with UN human rights treaties monitoring bodies. Stories like Seán’s deserve to be told and to instruct as this does!
